What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism, controlled by the brain, spinal cord and nerves of the body. The vertebrae, which protect the nervous system, when misaligned or lose its normal motion, causes malfunction of the tissues and organs throughout the body.

Chiropractic medicine is a form of natural health care that focuses on treating a patient without the use of drugs or medicines. Doctors of Chiropractic, more commonly known as chiropractors, are primary health care providers licensed in all 50 states, and are recognized by governmental health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Workers' Compensation programs and more. Every year, more than 30 million Americans see chiropractors as part of the regular health care programs and with over 84,000 licensed chiropractors nationwide and more than 10,000 students currently enrolled in chiropractic school, it is the fastest growing health care profession.

Chiropractors frequently treat individuals with problems, such as headaches, joint pain, neck pain, low back pain and sciatica. Chiropractors also treat patients with osteoarthritis, spinal disk conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. However, the scope of conditions that Chiropractors manage or provide care for is not limited to the common pains and problems listed above. Chiropractors also have the training to treat a variety of conditions such as allergies, asthma, digestive disorders, and other disorders as new research is developed.

The biggest challenge today for Chiropractors is teaching patients the value of Chiropractic care. Even to the point where there is an "out pocket" expense to the patient. The insurance policies, if there is coverage is limited and only address "reactive" care rather than the "proactive" care Chiropractic takes on. This reactive mentality limits the effectiveness of Chiropractic care to the patient. Health insurance in these days of healthcare is not related to health or wellness at all but to "catasrophic care." You are really sick!! If health insurance is so effective in this country why is our society increasingly unhealthy each year. In fact, the insurance companies do not want to hear "maintenance" or "wellness care"! This means the insurance companies will pay only if you are in "medical necessity"(PAIN) and only if the insurance claim adjustor deems it a "medical necessity" not your Doctor. Therefore, Chiropractors are forced into a "pain management" title.

This ridiculous process even holds true for our medical colleagues in each of their scope of practice. An insurance adjustor in many cases, who has no education in any scope of practice is determining your healthcare issues. At times, there are those practitioners in certain disciplines who work for the insurance company that are just hired to deny claims. False claims/lawsuits by Doctors, Lawyers and patients have had a contributing factor to the healthcare situation. Unfortunately, this ruins it for those who really need the healthcare.

Please note, insurance companies legally collect premiums from employers or/and employees then hold the right to deny or hold up any claim and use those collected monies for their investments. This is called a "float" and is illegal in any other business. They are allowed to do this by their lobbyists and financial interests in government. An insurance company has it figured out to the nearest cent how much money they will make on your policy, even if they pay out on claims. It is not free money. This is the reason why all deductibles and co-pays are increasing on every policy written today. It is an increase to you and the employer not the insurance company nor the CEO of the company during bonus time! Very Corporate America. It is important to know your insurance coverage policy these days and it is your responsibility to yourself and the loved one under the policy to know.
