ADJUSTMENTS/ MANIPULATION
The term "adjustment" refers to the "line of correction" chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. In esscence, restoring the motion to that particular vertebrae. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function. There are different techniques to adjust a spine. The Doctor will evaluate which techniques is best for each patient's need. At our office the techniques used are as follow: Diversified full spine, Activator, Thompson drop table, Toggle recoil, SOT , flexion-distraction( pumps the discs).
The adjustment made by the chiropractor consists of a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a vertebra, which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (cavitation). It is false that "bones are cracking". The cavitation sound is louder in the neck region because of the Estuchian Tubes(ear tubes) being located there. It is like if you cupped your hands around your mouth, the resonance of the voice is louder when this is done. The sensation is usually relieving, though minor discomfort has been reported (that usually lasts for only a short time duration) if the surrounding muscles are in spasm , have muscular adhesions(knots) or the patient tenses up during the Chiropractic procedure. All the soft tissue( muscle, tendon and ligament) must be brought to their end range of motion by the Chiropractor in the area being adusted. Breathing will help relax the body as well during the adjustment. An ice pack ( 15mins.) is recommended if any soreness or ache occurs after an adjustment and should be told to the patient by the Chiropractor.
There are times when joint cavitation or the click noise does not occur and this is often due to either significant muscle splinting or the patient may not be adequately relaxed during the Chiropractic procedure. At times like this, it is sometimes best for the Chiropractor to apply ice, have the patient rest, or do electrical stimulation, ultrasound, cold laser, myofascial release, ice or hot packs, massage prior to attempting spinal manipulation or then decide to use another techinque suitable for the adjustment of that spinal segment. The adjustment time depends on the problems reported to the Doctor. Each session can be as fast as 5-10 mins., if therapies are applied it can be longer. Please judge your time for your care. Make this time for you and your health.
A side note. All types of Doctors pay malpractice insurance based on a "risk/benefit factor" of their procedure or discipline. Chiropractors pay the lowest of all Doctors. (Approx.$2,000/yr.)
